MUSIC: AN ACTIVE MINISTRY IN OUR PARISH
As was mentionned on the music home page, the community of St. Andrew the Apostle has always thought music to be an integral part of liturgical celebrations. The primacy of "full participation of the assembly in the celebration of liturgies" and encouraging people to express their faith through music and song is the main purpose of all liturgical music teams at St. Andrew's.
Many different styles of music are used to reflect the diversity of the members of our community. Two hymnals are used at our parish: The Catholic Book of Worship III and the Glory and Praise.
We are fortunate at St. Andrew the Apostle to have members in the many music ministries who commit their time every weekend to lead the assembly's song of faith. On Saturday, Sharon Oliver leads the assembly and is accompanied by Deborah on the piano. Sharon and Deborah's musical skills and experience certainly brighten the prayer song at our community's 5 p.m. Mass. We are grateful for their commitment to the liturgies at our church.
On Sundays, we have two Masses. At the 9 a.m. Mass singing is lead by cantor Sharon Oliver and accompanied by Norm Blanchard at the piano or at the organ. Sharon's presence and talents both in liturgy and music are appreciated at St. Andrew's. Our congregation is a « singing people » and this is partly accredited to Sharon's persistence and patience in regards to teaching the many hymns and psalms that are sung at our parish. Music at the 11 a.m. Mass is facilitated by the « St. Andrew the Apostle Choir ». The 30 or so committed members of this group are there every Thursday for rehearsal and on Sunday mornings for Mass. The group is comprised of people of all backgrounds and of all ages. The choir's role is to « support » congregational singing and to add colour to the music at this Mass, such as harmony and different nuances that add to the song of the people.
The funeral choir at St. Andrew the Apostle, directed by Laura Lepage, is a group comprised of approx 25 members who are very faithful to their calling of consoling the bereaved through their music. At funeral liturgies, our grieving families are given the opportunity to express their feelings and to feel presence, support and consolation through the music that is lead by this wonderful group of fellow parishionners.
We always welcome new members to music ministry at St. Andrew the Apostle church. If you are interested in one or more of these ministries, please contact Normand Blanchard at the numbers or email found on the top left corner of this page.
